Salary and Benefits
The following are the general conditions of a private school in Korea .
DATE: Positions are available all year round.
TERM: One year contract.
SALARY: 2,100,000 to 2,500,000 South Korean Won per month (approximately $2180 to $2600 USD per month—please refer to the Universal Currency Converter for precise values). Salary varies according to qualifications and experience.
OVERTIME RATE: 15,000 to 20,000 Won per hour.
INCOME TAX: Approximately 3.3% to 6%
STUDENTS: Range in level from kindergarten to elementary school (ages 6 to 15) to high school to adults. Class sizes are approximately 12 students.
TEACHING HOURS: 25 to 30 hours per week; weekdays, Monday to Friday.
HOUSING: Free furnished housing provided by the employer. Apartment will be chosen by the employer. The cost of monthly services, utilities, and telephone charges for the accommodations provided will be paid by the teacher.
SEVERANCE PAYMENT: Will be provided by the school upon completion of 12 months employment
AIRFARE: The employer will purchase an economy class ticket for the teacher from the closest international airport to South Korea. After completing the one-year contract, the teacher will be provided with a return ticket.
MEDICAL INSURANCE: Employees will be covered by medical benefits under the Korean Medical Insurance Union, a Government Health Organization. Half of the cost of this coverage is paid by the employer, and the other half by the employee.
SICK LEAVE: Employees are permitted between three to six days of paid emergency leave (many schools call it sick leave). This is permitted only under unusual circumstances, including death or serious illness of self or immediate family, upon presentation of proof to the institution.
VACATION: 10 vacation days are allowed, determined by the school's schedule and the South Korean National Holidays.
