FAQ
Q: Do I need to be able to speak Korean to teach English in South Korea?
A: No. Employers in South Korea expect you to speak English all the time with your students as practice. However, learning a few phrases, such as “Thank you,” “How are you?,” etc., will help bridge the gap between you and your students.
Q: Can I speak with someone who has completed his/her contract or is currently teaching English in South Korea?
A: Yes. In fact, we encourage you to do so! Once you have been offered a teaching position, we'll set up an interview between you and the School Director or Manager, whom you can ask to speak directly with a teacher currently teaching English at their school.
Q: Does ESL Elite Recruiting charge me a service fee?
A: No, we will not ask for any fees from you.
Q: What is the process for obtaining a working visa?
A: Once you've signed a contract with your school, we will start to process all of the paper work necessary for you to obtain an E2 working visa. You will need to send specific documents to your employer (FedEx and DHL are courier services known for their reliability). The school will then forward your documents to the immigration office in South Korea. At this point, you can expect to wait one week to receive your Visa Issuance Number. Once you receive it, you will need to go to the South Korean Consulate nearest you to get your visa stamped in your passport. The whole process usually takes three to four weeks.
Q: How do I apply for a teaching position in Korea?
A: It's very easy! Email us your resume and photo, and tell us your preferences. We will contact you shortly to help you get a teaching job.
Q: Will my accommodation be free?
A: Yes, your school will provide you with free housing. You won't have to pay rent, but you will need to cover the cost of utilities. The total cost of utilities can range anywhere from 40,000 to 80,000 South Korean Won per month , depending on your usage.
Q: When is the best time to start looking for a teaching job in South Korea?
A: As early as possible! Get started ASAP to allow yourself time to research the location in which you'd like to work. It will also allow us time to find the most suitable position for you. Teaching jobs are usually posted 45 to 60 days before the starting date.
Q: How will I be paid?
A: You will be paid in South Korean Won either bi-weekly or monthly. If you set up a bank account there, your salary will be deposited automatically into your account. You will also be able to wire money back home from your bank, if you choose.
Q: How much will I have to pay in taxes?
A: Most foreign employees are required to pay South Korean income tax. This tax will usually be deducted from your paycheque by your employer. Income tax ranges between 3.5% and 5% of your salary.
