There are 3 terms of the school year in Japan ; April to July, September to December, and January to March. The children in Japan start their nursery schools when they are age 3 or 4. They start their primary school at 6. The primary school consists 6 years, and then 3 years of junior high. The total 9 years of education are mandatory. Schools are very strict and formal. [juku] is like after school for junior high and high school students. They help students with their homework and help them to prepare their exams.
